AAPI Convention Brings Together Physicians and Philanthropists in Tampa
The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) hosted its 2026 Convention from July 2-5 in Tampa, Florida, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The event, held at the JW Marriott and Tampa Marriott Water Street, was a blend of medical discussions, cultural events, and community service, emphasizing the importance of US-India collaboration.
Incoming AAPI President Dr. Meher Medavaram welcomed attendees and highlighted various new initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare. The convention recognized outstanding individuals and their contributions, alongside enjoyable evening activities.
A major highlight of this year’s convention was the recognition of Nita Ambani, founder of the Reliance Foundation, who received AAPI’s Humanitarian Award. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor presented her with a key to the city, underscoring her impact in philanthropy and healthcare. Ambani acknowledged the vital role of Indian American physicians and called for more cooperation between the US and India in health matters. Notably, a partnership was announced between Reliance Foundation and AAPI to improve rural healthcare.
Another significant moment was the recognition of Dr. Sudhir Parikh, who received accolades for his work in media and philanthropy. Additionally, Dr. Jagdish Gupta donated $100,000 to the AAPI Global Foundation, where he will serve as Chairman.
Dr. Meher Medavaram expressed her commitment to unity and integrity as AAPI’s new President. The Board of Trustees also welcomed new members, with Dr. Vijay Maurya as the Chairman, stressing responsible fund management and transparent operations.
Throughout the convention, attendees participated in Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions covering various healthcare topics, from lifestyle medicine to artificial intelligence in medicine. Young physicians showcased their research, sharing promising insights for the future.
The convention also provided an engaging space for introspection with daily meditation sessions and lively cultural evenings. Highlights included speeches by renowned figures, a vibrant concert by Kumar Sanu, and engaging performances from Bollywood stars.
Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, the outgoing AAPI President, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his term, emphasizing that the event’s success relied heavily on attendee participation. The convention was not just a gathering; it was a celebration of community, leadership, and shared goals in health care.
