Coffee Consumption May Reduce Risks of Liver Cancer and Cirrhosis, New Study Reveals

Morning Coffee Linked to Healthier Liver

A recent large study suggests that enjoying morning coffee is more than just a way to wake up—it may actually reduce the risk of serious liver issues. The research, featured in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, analyzed data from nearly 355,000 people involved in the UK Biobank.

The study tracked participants over an average of 13 years, specifically those without any prior liver issues like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Results showed that those who drank one to two cups of coffee daily had a 20% lower risk of developing cirrhosis and a 31% lower risk of dying from liver-related causes compared to non-coffee drinkers.

Those who indulged in five or more cups each day took things further, showing a 32% reduction in cirrhosis risk, a 42% decrease in liver-related deaths, and a staggering 47% lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common liver cancer.

While earlier studies hinted at coffee’s benefits for liver health, this research provides more solid evidence. The researchers also looked into additional data from a subset of nearly 29,000 participants and blood samples from about 50,000 others. They found significantly lower liver fat and iron levels in heavy coffee drinkers.

Interestingly, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee offered similar protective benefits, suggesting that chemicals in coffee—not just caffeine—are responsible. The study also revealed that drinking coffee black or with sweeteners had its own effects. While the health benefits persisted, adding sugar or artificial sweeteners slightly reduced these advantages, particularly regarding liver inflammation.

Although coffee drinking appears to be a simple way to support liver health, the researchers remind us that it should not replace other healthy habits. They also cautioned that since the study relied on participants’ self-reported coffee habits, there may be some inconsistencies in the data. As an observational study, it establishes a correlation but cannot definitively prove that coffee causes these benefits.

Overall, coffee lovers can enjoy their brew knowing it might just help protect their liver!
