No Evidence Connecting Indian Officials to Nijjar’s Killing, Says Former Envoy

Canadian authorities have confirmed that there is no evidence linking the Indian government to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Sanjay Verma, India’s former high commissioner to Canada, noted this development strengthens India’s position on the matter.

Nijjar was shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, in June 2023. Following the incident, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Indian agents were involved, leading to a significant downturn in relations between India and Canada. In October 2024, Verma had to leave Canada after being named a “person of interest” in the investigation.

After the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) completed their investigation with assistance from U.S. authorities, they stated that there was no evidence implicating Indian officials in the murder. Verma emphasized that this outcome supports India’s longstanding policy of non-interference in other nations’ internal matters.

“We have maintained our principled stance, and it has been validated,” he stated. The multi-nation investigation, dubbed Operation Hard Ball, showed that Nijjar’s murder was not related to Indian actors but was instead the result of gang-related conflicts.

The recent charges against Lawrence Bishnoi, an Indian gangster, and his associate, highlight the gang rivalry that led to Nijjar’s assassination. Authorities have linked 24 individuals from three crime groups in India to this case.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Lisa Moreland confirmed that the evidence from Operation Hard Ball does not indicate any involvement from Indian officials. Verma reiterated that Trudeau’s accusations were politically charged and unfounded, asserting that Nijjar’s killing was part of a gang feud.

He explained that various gangs, including those associated with Khalistani elements in Canada, were involved in illegal activities, creating a hostile environment that could lead to violent outcomes. Verma mentioned that Goldy Brar, a notorious figure, had been on Canada’s most-wanted list during his tenure there, but evidence for cooperation from the Canadian side was lacking.

Following Trudeau’s allegations, diplomatic tensions grew, leading to mutual expulsions of officials. Recently, back-channel communications between Indian and Canadian security agencies resumed, particularly after the election of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Verma views these communications positively, as they foster an environment to discuss mutual concerns. He pointed out ongoing dialogues in security and trade, indicating a cooperative direction in relations between India and Canada. Although the relationship is improving, Verma acknowledged there is still work to be done, especially regarding political issues. He expressed optimism about advancements in economic partnerships and investments.

In Summary:

The confirmation by Canadian authorities that there is no connection between Indian officials and Nijjar’s murder marks a crucial point in Indo-Canadian relations. Both countries have taken steps to mend ties amid past accusations, suggesting a path towards improved cooperation in various sectors.
