Sheikh Hasina Plans Return to Bangladesh Amidst Political Turmoil

In a significant development, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in exile, has announced her intention to return to Bangladesh around December. Facing a death sentence and with her party banned, Hasina shared her plans during an interview with Reuters.

The 78-year-old, who was the longest-serving leader of Bangladesh, expressed her commitment to voluntarily surrender to authorities upon her return, despite the risks involved. She acknowledged the possibility of arrest or worse but emphasized her desire to return to the land where her parents are buried.

Hasina, who fled the country two years ago after her government faced protests, was sentenced to death in absentia for her role in a violent crackdown on demonstrators. She has consistently denied these charges. She hopes her return will not only highlight the political struggles in Bangladesh but might also ease strained relations with India, where she has been living in exile.

The Awami League, her political party, has faced significant challenges. Hasina noted the oppression faced by her party members and called on them to join her when she returns. The former Home Minister, also under a death sentence, is among those expected to follow suit.

While Hasina has not discussed her plans with foreign governments, her announcement marks a pivotal moment. “The authorities want me back,” she stated, referring to ongoing attempts to extradite her. Despite this, she reiterated her determination to set foot back in Bangladesh.

Once a champion of democracy, Hasina’s lengthy rule has drawn criticism for suppressing dissent and undermining democratic norms, a point she fiercely disputes. Recent violent clashes, resulting in numerous fatalities, have marred her legacy.

Hasina expressed concern over the state of her party, noting many members face arrest and other dangers. She believes that upon her return, the truth of the political climate will be revealed. “I believe in justice,” she said, indicating her desire to challenge the legality of the accusations against her in court.

Amidst ongoing discussions about democracy and political rights, Hasina has remained connected with her supporters through online meetings. She hopes that despite the challenges, the Awami League will continue to be a vocal part of the political landscape.

As she contemplates her return, Hasina insists that the fate of her party and its members should be decided by the people of Bangladesh. “Let the people decide,” she stated, reflecting her commitment to democratic principles despite the shadows of past governance.
