Netanyahu Criticizes Iran, Highlights U.S.-Israel Partnership
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently spoke out against Iran’s harsh regime, emphasizing the recent “Death to America” chants heard during a funeral in Iran. He also highlighted the tragic loss of 40,000 Iranian lives. Netanyahu stressed the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance in facing Iran’s nuclear and missile threats. He condemned Turkey for its support of Hamas and for issues affecting NATO allies.
As discussions around Iran and the Ukraine conflict dominated the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkish leaders’ growing antisemitic remarks went largely unnoticed. Relations between Turkey and Israel have further deteriorated, sparking a war of words.
In a recent CNN Türk interview, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan claimed that Israel is “a burden that humanity can no longer bear,” calling on other nations to pressure Israel regarding its policies.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar responded to Fidan’s comments, describing them as a “clear call for genocide.” He warned that history shows what can happen when such rhetoric goes unchallenged and expressed concern over the dehumanization of a people.
Sinan Ciddi, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, characterized Fidan’s comments as among the most extreme rhetoric from a statesman since the Holocaust. He noted the sharp rise in anti-Israel sentiment in Turkey, claiming it intensified significantly after the events of October 7.
Despite his previous condemnations of antisemitism, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his government continue their critical statements against Israel. Ciddi traced the growing anti-Israel sentiments back to 2008, marking the beginning of a rift between Turkey and Israel that has only deepened.
Polling data supports this climate, with a recent Pew Research survey indicating that 91% of Turks have a very unfavorable view of Israel.
While the Turkish Foreign Ministry continues to voice hostility towards Israel, questions remain about how the U.S. plans to address this concerning rhetoric from Turkish leadership, especially given their status as a NATO ally.
As tensions rise, Ciddi cautioned that it’s crucial to hold Turkey accountable for its human rights record and threats to democratic norms, implying that unchecked hostility could have wider regional implications.
The Turkish Embassy in Washington has yet to comment on the situation.
