Microsoft to Cut 4,800 Jobs Amid Restructuring Efforts

Microsoft has announced plans to lay off about 4,800 employees, which is approximately 2.1% of its workforce. This decision comes as the company seeks to reorganize its Xbox and commercial divisions while shifting its focus towards investments in artificial intelligence (AI).

On Monday morning, Microsoft’s stock dipped by 1.5% following the news of the layoffs. In a memo to staff, Amy Coleman, Chief People Officer, noted that AI is transforming the way work is conducted by automating certain tasks. She emphasized that these layoffs are part of a larger plan to realign the company’s resources.

Coleman clarified that the positions being cut are not being directly replaced by AI, but acknowledged that AI is indeed changing workplace dynamics.

This announcement follows a challenging first half of 2026 for Microsoft, during which the company experienced a 23% drop in its stock value—the worst performance it has seen since 2022.

Earlier in the year, Microsoft offered voluntary buyout options to around 9,000 employees, which is about 7% of their U.S. workforce. Typically, the company announces job cuts at the end of its financial year in June as it drafts spending plans for the coming year.

As major tech companies ramp up their investments in AI—projected to exceed $700 billion this year—Microsoft joins others like Amazon and Meta, which have also laid off thousands of workers this year amid pressure to deliver returns on these technological advancements.

This strategic shift highlights the tech industry’s ongoing evolution amid rising costs and the growing importance of AI in business operations.
