Pope Leo XIV’s Vatican Declares Society of St. Pius X in Schism Over Bishop Controversy

Pope Leo XIV Issues Strong Warning About A.I. in First Encyclical

Pope Leo XIV has raised alarms about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (A.I.) in his inaugural encyclical. He emphasized the need for stricter government regulations, highlighting threats to human dignity posed by emerging technologies.

In a separate but significant move, the Vatican has responded to a major challenge from a breakaway Catholic group, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX). The Vatican declared this society to be in schism after it consecrated four new bishops without the Pope’s approval, which is strictly against Catholic doctrine.

The ordination took place at the group’s seminary in Écône, Switzerland, despite Pope Leo’s appeal urging them to reconsider. In an official decree, the Vatican excommunicated these newly consecrated bishops and two others involved in the ceremony, stating that these actions intentionally broke away from the Catholic Church.

This decision is part of a long-standing conflict. Previous popes have tried to mend ties with the SSPX, which rejects a number of the reforms from the Second Vatican Council, including the use of local languages for Mass rather than just Latin.

Pope Leo’s Plea to Address Divisions

Pope Leo personally reached out to the SSPX’s leader, the Rev. Davide Pagliarani, pleading for the consecrations to be canceled. He expressed his concerns that this act would further fracture relationships between the SSPX and the Vatican.

The response from Pagliarani was that the ordinations were meant to serve the Church, not oppose the Pope. He stated that they believe their actions stem from a place of love and respect for the Pope and his role.

Only the Pope has the right to approve the consecration of bishops to maintain the Church’s unity. This move by the Vatican also revokes privileges previously given to SSPX, which can no longer administer certain sacraments. The Vatican has advised Catholics attending SSPX Masses to distance themselves from the group.

An Ongoing Challenge

The Society of St. Pius X was founded in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and has faced similar challenges before. Lefebvre himself was excommunicated in 1988 for consecrating bishops without papal consent. While some previous excommunications were lifted in 2009, the SSPX has not fully reconciled with the Church.

Despite operating outside formal Vatican authority, the SSPX has continued to grow, serving a substantial number of followers worldwide, making it one of the largest traditionalist Catholic movements today.

This situation reflects the ongoing efforts needed to maintain peace and unity within the Catholic Church.
