Tanmaxxing: The Sun-Soaking Trend Sparking Worry Among Skin Experts

New Trend in Tanning: What You Need to Know

As summer kicks into high gear, a new social media trend called “tanmaxxing” is gaining traction. This trend focuses on getting a deeper tan by maximizing sun exposure, often using oils, bronzers, and gels to enhance the color of the skin. It’s especially popular among younger generations, who share their tanning experiences online, showing off their tanned skin and outdoor setups.

However, while soaking up the sun can be a great mood booster and helps with vitamin D production, dermatologists are sounding the alarm about the risks. Excessive sun exposure, as encouraged by tanmaxxing, can lead to serious skin damage.

Dr. Michael Tassavor, a dermatologist based in New York, warns, “There’s no such thing as a safe, natural tan.” He explains that tanning actually indicates skin damage. “People promoting deep tans as a wellness boost are misleading. A tan is your skin showing distress from UV damage,” he said. Dr. Tassavor has treated many skin cancers in individuals who took part in frequent tanning before it was termed tanmaxxing, most of whom express regret about their past choices.

Tassavor also mentions that UV radiation, including from tanning beds, is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization, putting it in the same risk category as tobacco. Using tanning beds before the age of 35 can increase the risk of melanoma by approximately 75%.

The dermatologist stresses that the harmful effects of tanning often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Many common myths surrounding tanning are misleading. For instance, skipping sunscreen does not lead to better tans, and a so-called “base tan” does not offer protection against further sunburn.

Although sunlight isn’t something to be completely avoided, the doctor suggests there are safer ways to enjoy the outdoors. Most vitamin D can effectively come from diet and supplements, without the need for prolonged sun exposure.

Dr. Tassavor advises using sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapplying it every two hours when outdoors. He also strongly recommends avoiding tanning beds altogether, as there is no safe level of UV exposure, and they can hasten the aging of your skin.

In summary, while enjoying the sunshine is beneficial, it’s crucial to take care of your skin to prevent damage. Balance your time outside with proper sun protection to ensure a healthy, safe summer.
