Jannik Sinner’s Grit Shines Through Injury in Wimbledon Opener

Jannik Sinner had a moment of concern during his first match of Wimbledon 2026, but he quickly reassured everyone that there was no need to worry. On June 29, Sinner fought hard to secure a comeback victory against Miomir Kecmanovic on Centre Court, despite slipping and injuring his foot.

The defending champion had to rally from a tricky situation, being down two sets to one, but he managed to win the match with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3. This thrilling match lasted for three and a half hours, and avoided what could have been a major upset on the first day of the tournament.

The incident that raised eyebrows happened in the third set when Sinner slipped while maneuvering near the baseline, causing blood to seep from his toe and stain his white shoe. Despite the scare, Sinner kept playing without taking a lengthy medical break, showing remarkable determination.

After struggling in the first set and losing a tiebreaker in the third, Sinner found his groove and dominated the final two sets, wrapping up the win in style.

‘It Was Just a Nail’

After the match, Sinner played down the seriousness of the injury. “No, no, I’m good. It looked worse than it was. They surprised me by letting me keep playing with the all-white dress code since it got a little red. It was just a nail,” he said during his post-match interview.

He also explained why he chose not to stop the game for treatment. “I didn’t want to interrupt Miomir because we both had good momentum. It was a great match, and I didn’t want to pause for any reason. Everything is fine, thank you,” he added.

Sinner’s strong performance showcased the resilience that has marked his season. After Kecmanovic took the critical third-set tiebreak, Sinner raised his game, taking the fourth set and holding his nerve in the final set. He racked up an impressive 31 aces throughout the match, dominating key points to seal his victory.

Next up for Sinner is a clash with Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round as he aims to continue his journey in the tournament and solidify his reputation as one of the toughest competitors on the ATP Tour.
