Jill Smokler, Founder of Scary Mommy, Passes Away at 48
Jill Smokler, the beloved founder of the parenting blog Scary Mommy, has died at the age of 48 after a courageous fight against glioblastoma, a severe type of brain cancer. Her passing was announced on ScaryMommy.com this past Monday, marking the end of a two-year battle with the illness.
Smokler started her blog in 2008 to share the ups and downs of motherhood, quickly gaining a large following for her candid and relatable approach. As Scary Mommy grew into a significant parenting platform, she became a trusted voice in the community, known for her humor and honesty about the challenges of raising children. Beyond blogging, she authored successful books, spoke at various conferences, and made appearances on national television, earning multiple Webby Awards in recognition of her influence.
In a heartfelt statement following her death, her family expressed, “Jill spent her life telling the truth about motherhood—that it could be both beautiful and overwhelming. By sharing her experiences, she helped countless women feel less alone.”
Jill was a devoted mother to three children: Lily, Ben, and Evan, and her family mentioned how proud she was of them. “We are devastated by her loss but so proud of the impact she left on the world,” they added.
Smokler’s health troubles began in April 2024 when she suffered a seizure, leading to the discovery of a brain tumor. After surgery to remove the tumor, she experienced severe memory loss, even struggling to recognize her children. “I’m thankful I don’t remember their looks when I couldn’t recognize them,” she shared in a previous interview.
Glioblastoma is known to be one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, with no known cure at this time. It represents about 13.9% of all brain tumors, with over 12,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Unfortunately, the median survival rate for patients is typically between 12 to 18 months, with only a small percentage surviving beyond five years.
Following her surgery, Smokler bravely documented her experiences with radiation and chemotherapy, openly discussing the toll the treatment took on her, including fatigue and hair loss.
In closing, the Scary Mommy community reflected, “Thank you, Jill, for everything. May you rest in peace.”
