West Indies Continue Strong Run in Women’s T20 World Cup
The West Indies women’s cricket team has boosted their chances of reaching the semi-finals in the Women’s T20 World Cup. On Sunday, they secured a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka at the County Ground in Bristol, putting themselves in a solid position among the top teams. Alongside England, the West Indies are seen as strong contenders to finish in the top two of their group.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, finds themselves under pressure, sitting in fifth place in the standings, just above Ireland. The West Indies’ victory has intensified the situation for New Zealand, whose chances of advancing now rely heavily on other teams’ results.
Matthews and Ramharack Shine Against Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka faced a tough day at the crease, being bowled out for just 98 runs in 19.4 overs. The West Indies bowlers showcased their strength, leaving the Sri Lankan batting lineup in disarray. The innings began to crumble quickly as Sri Lanka lost three wickets for a mere nine runs, including skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who was dismissed for just 2 runs.
Hayley Matthews starred with the ball, taking three wickets for only 15 runs, continuing her reputation as a key player in ICC tournaments. Her early strikes made it difficult for Sri Lanka to form any partnerships. Chinelle Henry and Aaliyah Alleyne were also effective in the middle overs, while Karishma Ramharack contributed with two wickets for 15 runs, tightening the screws on the Sri Lankan batters.
Kavisha Dilhari provided some resistance with a score of 21 from 20 balls, and Nilakshika Silva managed to top-score with 30 runs from 26 balls. Yet, their efforts were not enough, as wickets continued to tumble, preventing any significant recovery.
The disciplined West Indies bowling and sharp fielding left Sri Lanka in a challenging position, setting up an easy target for the chase.
West Indies Steady in Chase
While the West Indies had a few shaky moments while chasing, they successfully reached the target in just 16.1 overs. Hayley Matthews kicked off the innings with 17 runs from 17 balls before being run out in the fourth over. Deandra Dottin added 12 runs, but Sri Lanka managed to take two quick wickets during the powerplay to apply some pressure.
Despite this, Stafanie Taylor played a crucial role, finishing with 27 not out from 25 balls, steering her team to victory with her calmness and skill. She proved to be a vital player in the middle order, maintaining the team’s momentum.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers had some highlights, with Kavisha Dilhari taking two wickets for 22 runs, and Chamari Athapaththu and Nimasha Meepage also claiming scalps. However, their efforts were overshadowed by 23 extras and a manageable target for the West Indies.
West Indies completed the chase with almost four overs to spare, showcasing their depth and composure, which will be crucial as they move forward in the tournament.
