JD Vance Shares His Favorite Dad Joke

Recently, on the popular show ‘The Five’, hosts Dana Perino, Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, and Jessica Tarlov had a fun moment exchanging classic dad jokes. This humorous discussion followed findings from The Washington Post, which highlighted how dad jokes—despite often being cheesy—can play a key role in parenting. They can help strengthen the bond between fathers and their children.

For example, one light-hearted dad joke shared was: “My neighbor tiled my roof for free. He said it was on the house.” While this might earn eye-rolls from family, experts say that such playful puns can actually lower stress levels and benefit health.

According to a study from psychology researchers Paul J. Silvia and Meriel I. Burnett, dad jokes are typically structured around puns and wordplay. This straightforward style makes them relatable and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age.

Laughter has powerful effects on our bodies. It can decrease stress hormones like cortisol and increase happy hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. A 2023 study published in PLOS One revealed that just one good laugh could reduce cortisol levels significantly—by over 36%. This not only brightens our mood but also helps our brains function better.

Interestingly, the ability to understand puns is linked to skills like verbal ability and creative thinking. Sharing laughter can increase oxytocin levels in families, which strengthens emotional connections between parents and children. Jacqueline Harding, an early childhood expert, emphasizes the importance of humor in children’s growth, stating that joy helps them cope with stress and develop resilience.

Harding suggests that “hope and humor” are not just nice to have but are essential for healthy development. Engaging in joyful play and laughter not only fosters better communication but also helps families cope with stress together.

Overall, the benefits of dad jokes and laughter extend far beyond smiles and eye-rolls; they are a simple yet effective way to enhance family bonds and improve mental well-being.
