Parliament Panel to Assess India’s Economic Landscape Amid Global Challenges and Growth Doubts

A significant parliamentary committee has decided to closely examine India’s changing economic landscape as policymakers face challenges from global tensions, trade issues, and a slowdown in worldwide growth.

The Standing Committee on Finance, as noted in a Lok Sabha update, has picked “Evolving Economic Conditions in the Country” as an additional topic for review in the 2025-26 period. Typically, these committees select subjects to analyze right after they are formed, but they can also add more topics based on shifts in the economy and policy.

This decision comes during a time when the Indian economy is dealing with a tricky global environment filled with geopolitical conflicts, tariff disputes, supply-chain hiccups, and fluctuating prices of essential goods.

Recent estimates suggest that India’s economy grew by 7.7% in 2025-26, boosted by a strong growth rate of 7.8% in the first quarter of the year. The previous year witnessed a growth of 7.1%. Nevertheless, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) predicts a slowdown to 6.6% for the current fiscal year, citing ongoing tensions in West Asia that have raised global prices for crude oil and fertilizers, which India relies on heavily from abroad.

In its study, the committee will likely gather insights from the finance ministry, the RBI, economists, and other relevant parties to prepare a report with findings and suggestions. The review will likely explore various aspects such as economic growth, inflation, employment trends, fiscal management, banking developments, trade performance, and how global occurrences affect the domestic economy.

This examination is crucial as India aims to maintain robust growth while navigating external challenges like geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties, supply-chain blockages, and commodity price swings.

For the 2026-27 period, the Standing Committee on Finance, led by Bhartruhari Mahtani, has identified topics across several ministries, including Finance, Corporate Affairs, Planning (NITI Aayog), and Statistics, for in-depth investigation.
