African and Caribbean Leaders Unite in Ghana for Bold 19-Point Reparations Initiative

African and Caribbean Leaders Demand Reparations at Ghana Conference

African and Caribbean leaders are calling for reparations, including financial compensation, debt cancellation, and formal apologies from nations involved in the transatlantic slave trade. This initiative was part of a new 19-point plan adopted during a recent conference held in Ghana.

The plan aims for a Global Reparations Fund, the return of valuable cultural artifacts, and changes to international financial systems perceived as unfair to developing nations. It will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly as part of a coordinated effort by African and Caribbean states.

The African Union and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Commission on Reparatory Justice endorsed the proposal at the close of a three-day conference.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama addressed the delegates, emphasizing that while no one present should be blamed for past atrocities, recognizing and acting on historical responsibilities is essential. The proposal does not specify which countries should offer reparations or apologies.

The plan also includes calls for climate justice, expanded citizenship options for Africans in the diaspora, and a “right of return” for descendants of enslaved individuals. Additionally, it encourages African nations to preserve former slave forts and castles as memorials.

Advocates highlight that over 12.5 million Africans were forcibly taken and transported between the 15th and 19th centuries, leaving lasting impacts felt today across Africa and the Caribbean.

The conference followed a UN resolution in March that recognized transatlantic slavery as “one of the gravest crimes against humanity.” This resolution saw a majority in favor, but the U.S., Israel, and several other countries either opposed it or abstained due to concerns about creating a hierarchy among crimes against humanity.

The event featured leaders from several countries, including Namibia, Liberia, and Barbados. French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a virtual address, acknowledging the profound suffering caused by slavery. He stated that reparations must not be viewed merely as a one-time solution, emphasizing the ongoing importance of addressing historical injustices.

This gathering marks a significant step in unifying various reparations efforts from African and Caribbean nations into a coherent proposal to present to the international community.
