Evian-les-Bains, France – On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized a strong bond with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a loyal friend even as their ties face challenges. Issues such as trade disputes, oil sanctions, and a recent U.S. military strike that resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors have tested their relationship.
Their meeting occurred shortly after the tragic incident in the Gulf of Oman, where the U.S. blockade aims to control oil shipments. The Indian government has officially protested this strike.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. During the meeting, Trump downplayed any notion of trouble between the two nations, repeatedly praising Modi as a skilled negotiator.
Trump stated, “We have the best relationship. We cannot be closer than we are.” He then reached out to hold Modi’s hand, underlining their connection.
When Modi took the floor, he directly addressed the recent strike, highlighting the safety of Indian seafarers around the world. He thanked Trump for efforts made towards achieving peace with Iran, expressing confidence that the safety of seafarers would be prioritized in this new understanding.
Regarding the tragedy of the sailors, Trump commented on the challenges of the maritime profession and expressed sympathy, saying, “It’s a tough profession… We love all of those people. They’re great people.”
Trump’s bond with Modi has been notably warm since his first term. During a visit to India in 2020, Modi hosted Trump at a grand rally, and earlier, they shared the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston, which attracted a large audience from the Indian community in Texas.
However, current dynamics between the U.S. and India have been affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine and ongoing trade issues. Last year, the Trump administration imposed significant tariffs on Indian exports, partly due to India’s continued oil purchases from Russia. While the two nations have reached an interim trade deal, discussions for a more comprehensive agreement are still in progress.
On Wednesday, Trump indicated that a new trade deal is “very close,” while praising Modi’s negotiation skills. “He’s as tough as they come,” he said, humorously contrasting Modi’s appearance with his business acumen.
This meeting highlights the intricate balance of personal rapport and geopolitical challenges between the two leaders.
