India Advances Trade Agreements at G7 Summit

During the recent G7 meeting in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made significant headway in trade discussions with several world leaders. The gathering took place in Évian-les-Bains, and it marked an important moment for India’s economic future.

Key highlights from the meetings include:

  1. India-UK Trade Deal: PM Modi met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, announcing that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will begin on July 15. This deal is expected to enhance trade and investment between the two nations significantly.

  2. India-Canada Partnership: In a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). They reaffirmed their goal to conclude negotiations by 2026.

  3. India-EU Trade Agreement: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the EU plans to sign a major trade deal with India by the end of this year. This agreement, initially reached in January, aims to strengthen two-way trade and lessen reliance on resources from the US. von der Leyen stated, “We have concluded the mother of all trade deals, and we will sign the Free Trade Agreement by year-end.”

  4. US-India Trade Talks: In a meeting with PM Modi, US President Donald Trump mentioned that the US and India are “very close” to finalizing a long-awaited trade agreement. This development marks a positive shift in relations that had been strained due to high tariffs on Indian goods, which have since been lowered.

The India-UK trade agreement was finalized last year, but the announcement of its implementation date was highly anticipated. PM Modi emphasized that this deal will create numerous opportunities for Indian farmers, workers, startups, and innovators, contributing to the vision of a developed India by 2047.

The India-EU agreement, reached earlier this year, could come into effect in 2027 if signed by the end of this year. Reports suggest the deal could significantly increase the EU’s exports to India by cutting tariffs on 96.6% of traded goods.

Overall, these developments signal a promising future for India’s trade relations on the global stage, opening doors for further economic growth.
