Government Launches Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026

The Department of Higher Education, part of the Ministry of Education, has started accepting applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026. This initiative aims to attract Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals from around the world to conduct advanced research in India’s top universities and national laboratories.

Applications opened on June 1, 2026, through the official PMRC portal, and are available for both research fellows and host institutions. The program focuses on 13 key areas, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, and biotechnology, among others.

The PMRC scheme offers three categories based on the applicant’s experience and achievements: Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows, and Research Chairs. Those selected will receive financial support, access to laboratories, and the chance to collaborate with some of India’s leading institutions.

Eligible applicants include Indian nationals living abroad, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) who have strong research backgrounds.

How to Apply for PMRC 2026 (Step-by-Step)

Interested candidates can follow these steps to apply:

  1. Visit the official PMRC portal: pmrc.education.gov.in
  2. Prepare necessary documents, including your Curriculum Vitae, proof of past work and education, details of your citizenship, research outputs, and preferred host institution.
  3. Submit your application.

The deadline for applications is July 15, and the engagement period will last up to five years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31.

Seven leading institutions have been selected to participate in this scheme: the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, and the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru.
