Mbappé Breaks Record in France’s Victory Over Senegal at World Cup 2026

Kylian Mbappé has made history by becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer during the team’s 3-1 win against Senegal at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The France captain netted two goals, including an impressive last-minute strike, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s longstanding record.

In a game where Senegal proved to be a tough opponent, France had to fight hard, especially in the first half. Mbappé, however, emphasized that his personal achievements are less important than his desire to help France secure another World Cup title. “I play to leave a mark on my country’s history and to help my team win the World Cup,” he stated after the match.

Starting the tournament with a victory is always promising, according to Mbappé, even if there’s still work to be done. “I don’t think we’re fully up and running yet, but starting with a win gives us some peace of mind,” he added.

His two goals bring his international total to 58, placing him above Lionel Messi and French icon Just Fontaine in World Cup scoring, with only Miroslav Klose ahead of him at 14 goals.

A Challenging Start

The match didn’t begin as smoothly as Mbappé would have liked. Senegal showed their strength in the first half, creating several good chances, including a shot that hit the post and a missed opportunity just before halftime. Mbappé struggled against Senegal’s strong defense and was kept quiet during the opening 45 minutes.

However, the game took a turn in the second half. A perfectly timed pass from Michael Olise allowed Mbappé to finally break through, striking the ball beyond Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. Later on, Bradley Barcola extended France’s lead. Senegal briefly sparked excitement with a stunning goal from Ibrahim Mbaye in stoppage time, but Mbappé responded with a powerful shot from nearly 30 yards, sealing the victory in style and setting a new record.

Looking Ahead

Following this win, France is in a strong position in their group, but Mbappé acknowledged that there’s still room for improvement. Coach Didier Deschamps’ team struggled initially, but their quality shone through after halftime.

Senegal’s coach, Pape Thiaw, lamented the missed opportunities that could have changed the outcome. With their eyes set on the next matches, France looks forward to solidifying their stance in the tournament as they face Iraq and Norway in upcoming games.
