SJM Urges US to Take Responsibility for Killing of Indian Seafarers

NEW DELHI: The Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has reached out to the US Ambassador Sergio Gor, demanding accountability for the recent tragedy in which three Indian seafarers lost their lives. The organization is calling for justice and fair compensation for the families affected by this incident.

The SJM is also seeking a promise that such attacks will not happen again, emphasizing the importance of sticking to international laws.

Last week, three Indian sailors were killed in a US military operation targeting a tanker near Oman. In response, New Delhi expressed serious concerns for the safety of its sailors and condemned the attack. The Indian government also summoned Jason Meeks, the US chargé d’affaires, to voice its protest against the incident.

As the economic wing of the RSS and a supporter of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the SJM has stressed the need for holding those responsible accountable and ensuring the safety and dignity of Indian seafarers.

Ashwani Mahajan, the National Co-Convenor of SJM, stated, “India reserves the right to bring this matter to international platforms like the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization to seek timely justice.” He expressed that the “tragic and unprovoked killing” of the unarmed sailors has caused shock and anger across India.

Mahajan highlighted that the actions of the US Armed Forces represent a serious breach of international laws related to maritime safety and human rights. He called the attacks a violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which guarantees safe and free navigation on international waters.

The SJM is demanding a thorough investigation, noting that such actions violate the right to life recognized under international human rights laws.

He added, “The killing of innocent Indian seafarers is not just a bilateral issue; it challenges the entire framework of international law. Permitting such acts would weaken the foundation of global maritime safety.”
