Health Secretary Issues Quarantine Order for Passenger Exposed to Hantavirus

June 16 – U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has mandated that an American passenger, who may have been exposed to hantavirus on a cruise, remains in quarantine. This decision comes despite medical advice and the passenger’s wishes, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The passenger, Angela Perryman, 47, is one of 18 Americans who were quarantined in Nebraska after cases of Andes hantavirus were detected aboard the cruise ship earlier this year.

A representative from the Department of Health and Human Services revealed that the monitoring period will end at midnight on June 21, lasting for 42 days. Perryman could not be reached for comment while at the facility.

According to officials, the remaining passengers at the quarantine unit will be released on June 22. This 42-day period started after they returned to the United States on May 10. Eight of the passengers who were on the hantavirus-affected MV Hondius have since returned home following three weeks of observation, while ten others are still being monitored.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had initially requested that those from the cruise ship remain under observation until May 31.

Controversy Over Quarantine Conditions

The New York Times has reported that some passengers were permitted to quarantine at home until June 22, contingent on local health officials overseeing their health through a law enforcement or community health representative.

The World Health Organization recommends a 42-day monitoring period for individuals at high risk following exposure. Perryman expressed her desire to return to her home in Florida, but the state declined to provide the necessary monitoring support.

The Times also mentioned that during a quarantine hearing, the CDC indicated that she should be able to complete her quarantine at home. A medical review by the CDC suggested that the likelihood of Perryman showing symptoms was decreasing over time.

Perryman recounted that a notification from Kennedy was slipped under her door, which informed her she could not leave the facility. The order stated that she was reasonably believed to be infected or exposed to the virus, regardless of the doctor’s report.

This situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding public health and individual rights when facing potential health crises.
