Health Officials Warn Against Co-Sleeping Trends on Social Media

In recent times, TikTok has become a popular platform for parents sharing their experiences, including the growing trend of co-sleeping with infants. While these videos often gather lots of views and likes, health experts in Indianapolis are sounding the alarm about the dangers of this practice.

Shanaya Macon, who directs Maternal and Child Health at the Marion County Public Health Department, has expressed serious concerns about the safety of co-sleeping. She noted an increase in videos where parents share beds with their babies or even let siblings join in.

Macon emphasized, “These practices are extremely unsafe and contribute to infant mortality.”

The Marion County health department reported that around 17% of infant deaths in 2023 were categorized as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID), which refers to fatalities occurring before a child’s first birthday without an evident cause. Such cases can include accidental suffocation during sleep.

To help prevent these heartbreaking incidents, health officials recommend the following safe sleep guidelines for parents:

  • Babies should always sleep alone in their own crib.
  • Keep the crib clear of pillows, stuffed animals, and other items.
  • Babies should be placed on their backs for sleep to ensure proper breathing.
  • Avoid using loose blankets; instead, opt for sleep sacks, which provide a safer sleeping environment.
  • Parents can foster bonding by sleeping in the same room but not in the same bed.

For more information on safe sleep practices, parents are encouraged to visit the Indiana Department of Health’s resource page.

This warning aims to inform and protect the well-being of infants, ensuring parents have the knowledge they need for safe sleep practices.
