Tragic Loss of Indian Sailor in Oman
A 35-year-old sailor named Nishanth Uirthanathan from Tamil Nadu sadly passed away due to medical issues while aboard a ship docked at Duqm Port in Oman on June 11, 2026. At the time, he was serving on the MT Celestial vessel. This incident comes just a day after India mourned three young sailors who lost their lives when a US military aircraft attacked their oil tanker, the MT Settebello, sparking outrage across the country.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed Nishanth’s passing, stating, “Indian national Mr. Nishanth Uirthanathan passed away due to medical complications.” They are currently working with the ship’s management and local authorities to handle the necessary arrangements to bring his body back to India.
The tragic news has led to significant reactions on social media, with many citizens calling on the Indian government, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Shipping, to look into the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure accountability.
A Wife’s Plea for Justice
Nishanth’s wife, Sarabin, reached out to news agencies, expressing her desire to see her husband’s body and calling for justice. She mentioned that she has an eight-month-old baby and a three-year-old daughter to care for. “We haven’t received any official statement from the company about my husband’s death. I kindly request the government to provide a steady job opportunity for me,” she stated.
Sarabin’s brother spoke about how Nishanth had been unwell for about a week before his passing. He described the lack of support from the company during this critical time, stating that they only learned of his death three days after he fell ill.
According to the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, Nishanth died on June 11, and a video shared shortly before revealed how weak he had become.
Who Was Nishanth Uirthanathan?
Nishanth Uirthanathan was a merchant navy sailor from Tamil Nadu. He encountered sudden health issues while working near the coast of Oman. Reports indicate that in his final moments, he was in a state of distress. His death has triggered a wave of anger following revelations about his difficult last days.
Circumstances of His Death
Nishanth became seriously ill on June 8, 2026, while the ship operated near Oman. Despite the captain’s repeated calls for medical assistance, help did not arrive in time, largely due to regional tensions and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. Unfortunately, after three days of battling for his life without timely medical aid, Nishanth passed away.
Return of His Remains
The Indian Embassy has assured that they are coordinating with the ship’s management to bring Nishanth Uirthanathan’s body home to India as soon as possible. However, no specific timeline has been announced for when this will happen.
This heartbreaking tragedy has not only affected Nishanth’s family but has raised broader concerns about the safety and support for sailors working far from home.
