Wimbledon Increases Prize Money for 2026 Championships

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has revealed that the total prize money for the 2026 Wimbledon Championships will reach an impressive £64.2 million, which is around Rs 821.8 crore. This amount marks a significant 20% increase from the previous year and is the highest increase in the tournament’s history.

This announcement comes at a crucial time, especially as players have been expressing their frustrations about how prize money is shared in Grand Slam tournaments. Recently, elite players gathered at the French Open to voice their concerns over what they believe is an unfair distribution of the substantial revenues generated by these major events.

Tensions at the French Open

Frustrations surged during the French Open when officials announced only a 9.5% increase to their prize pool. Key players, including top-ranked Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, publicly expressed their disappointment, highlighting that the players’ share of the revenue had actually fallen from 15.5% in 2024 to a predicted 14.9% in 2026.

In a symbolic act of protest, several top-10 players limited their pre-tournament press talks to just 15 minutes, referencing the 15% revenue share they felt confined by. Sabalenka went further, hinting that players might consider boycotting future major tournaments if their demands for fairer revenue distribution and better representation were not met.

Wimbledon’s Responsive Move

Facing potential backlash, Wimbledon officials decided to significantly increase their financial offerings. The £10.7 million rise in the prize pool boosts earnings across all tournament levels. The champions of both the men’s and women’s singles will now take home £3.6 million (about Rs 46.1 crore), a 20% increase from last year.

Moreover, the AELTC has put a focus on supporting early-round players and those in qualifying rounds. First-round losers will receive £80,000 (about Rs 1.02 lakh), up from £66,000 in 2025. The total prize money for qualifiers has also seen a significant 25% boost, bringing it to £6.2 million (approximately Rs 79.4 crore).

Key Prize Money Changes for 2026

  • Total Prize Pool: £64.2 million (Rs 821.8 crore)

    • Increase: £10.7 million (Rs 137 crore) from 2025.
    • Percentage Rise: 20%, the largest annual increase on record.
  • Singles Champions Payout: £3.6 million (Rs 46.1 crore)

    • Increase: 20% from last year’s £3 million.
    • Runners-Up Payout: £1.8 million (Rs 23 crore), an 18% rise.
  • Support for Early Rounds:

    • First-Round Losers: £80,000 (Rs 1.02 crore), a 21% rise from £66,000 in 2025.
    • Qualifying Draw Pool: £6.2 million (Rs 79.4 crore), up 25% from last year.

“This announcement reflects the success of The Championships and our sustainable approach that allows us to grow prize money while investing in facilities and supporting both British and international tennis,” stated AELTC Chair Deborah Jevans.

In recent years, the All England Club has made significant investments in prize money. Over the last ten years, rewards for singles champions have increased by 80%, while first-round losers have seen a remarkable 160% increase. Notably, the prize money for qualifying rounds has surged by 393% during the same timeframe.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Wimbledon has invested nearly £1 billion (about Rs 12,800 crore) back into the sport, which includes direct prize money and upgrades to event facilities, while also supporting the grass-court season and wider tennis initiatives.
