US State Department decries rising tide of executions targeting Iranian protesters

Iran’s Executions on the Rise Amidst Government Crackdown

The Iranian government has intensified its executions of activists and dissenters, with the actual count likely hidden due to internet censorship. Following protests in January 2026, the regime has aggressively targeted those opposing its rule.

A report from the Iran Human Rights Society shows that there have been 784 executions in the first half of 2026 alone. A representative for the organization pointed out that this marks a troubling increase since March, especially in the executions of political prisoners, reaching levels not seen in nearly four decades.

The situation is grim, with an anonymous State Department official acknowledging the alarming trend in Iran’s execution practices. “We strongly condemn the Iranian regime’s use of executions against people who are simply exercising their basic human rights,” the official stated, adding that for many years, Iranians have faced torture and unfair trials, often leading to executions based on coerced confessions.

Recent data from the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) indicates at least 18 prisoners were executed over a few days at the end of May. Among these, a particularly brutal public hanging was reported. In total, the NCRI has identified 32 executions linked to the January protests.

Maryam Rajavi, the NCRI’s President-elect, has called for urgent intervention from the United Nations to prevent further executions, emphasizing the need for action against the Iranian regime’s violent suppression of dissent.

Reports also indicate ongoing internet restrictions that complicate the tracking of executions. A representative from the Iran Human Rights Society mentioned their efforts to verify reports through numerous independent sources, despite the challenges posed by limited communication.

In light of these events, many Iranian expatriates are planning a significant demonstration in Paris on June 20. They aim to demand an end to the regime’s lethal practices, and over a hundred global leaders are expected to join.

The international community’s response remains under scrutiny, particularly from human rights advocates, as the situation in Iran continues to deteriorate.
