India’s Cricket Update: Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s Fitness Ahead of ODI Series

India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has shared some important news about the fitness of star players Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya as the team prepares for a three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan. With Virat Kohli ruled out due to a serious hamstring injury, all eyes are on whether Rohit and Hardik will be fit to play.

Both Rohit and Hardik were named in the initial white-ball squad, but their participation depends on getting medical clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). During a press conference following India’s recent Test victory in Mullanpur, Kotak provided an optimistic update, mentioning he hasn’t received definite news but feels positive about their chances.

“I honestly don’t know if they have been cleared or not. But I am confident they will be there. From what I’ve heard, they are doing fine. They just need to complete their fitness tests,” said Kotak.

As the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup approaches, every ODI match is significant. The competition for places in the team is heating up, especially with Shubman Gill taking the helm as the new ODI captain.

Rohit Sharma’s Fitness Status

There is still uncertainty about Rohit Sharma’s fitness. The former captain has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru since June 8. He missed several matches in the recent T20 league due to hamstring issues and was mostly used as a substitute, which limited his fielding time.

To be eligible for the ODI series, Rohit needs to pass rigorous fitness tests set by the BCCI, including speed and fielding assessments. While the team believes there are no significant injuries left, the final word on his fitness will come from the medical staff in Bengaluru.

Hardik Pandya’s Positive News

In contrast, Hardik Pandya has received clearance from the BCCI medical team after completing his rehabilitation. He had dealt with back spasms and illness that kept him out of some recent games, but his recovery means he will be available for the series, adding valuable flexibility as a pace-bowling option.

Unfortunately, the situation with Virat Kohli is less favorable. He is completely out of action after scans revealed a tear in his hamstring. Kohli got injured during the critical moments of the domestic T20 tournament in late May, and he will need considerable time to recover.

As the ODI series approaches, scheduled to take place in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai, the final decision regarding Rohit’s fitness will significantly influence the team’s lineup for Gill’s second series as captain.
