Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shines in IPL, But Concerns Raised About T20 Balance

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s incredible journey in the IPL has caught the attention of former Australia captain Greg Chappell. While he admires the teenager’s achievements, Chappell also points out potential issues within T20 cricket that come with such remarkable performances.

In a recent article for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell noted how the game has shifted too far in favor of batsmen, making amazing feats feel almost ordinary. He highlighted Sooryavanshi’s impressive season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs at an eye-popping strike rate of 237.3.

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi didn’t just participate—he dominated the tournament, hitting a record-breaking 72 sixes, surpassing the previous record held by Chris Gayle. Chappell praised his ability to take on some of the world’s best bowlers, but he expressed concern that such a young player could achieve this so easily, suggesting that the sport has a deeper issue.

Chappell raised alarms about the structural changes in T20 cricket, like the Impact Player rule, which gives teams an extra specialist batter. He believes this has made extraordinary performances the new normal, rather than something to be marveled at.

As T20 cricket stands on the brink of becoming more of a batting showcase than a balanced sport, Chappell proposed three key changes to restore some equilibrium.

Chappell’s Three Suggestions to Enhance T20 Cricket

  1. Limit Batting Teams to Six Wickets
Chappell suggests reducing the available wickets for batting teams from ten to six. This change would make losing wickets more impactful and encourage batsmen to play smarter.

  2. More Grass on Pitches
By keeping at least 3mm of grass on the pitches, fair conditions for fast bowlers could be improved. He also recommends creating pitches with different qualities to introduce more strategic elements to the game.

  3. Revise the LBW Law
Chappell believes the LBW (Leg Before Wicket) rules should be adjusted so any ball that could hit the stumps would be deemed a wicket, regardless of where it lands. This change would help level the playing field for bowlers.

As discussions continue, the cricketing community must consider these insights to ensure that T20 remains an exciting, balanced sport for everyone involved.
