Shreyas Iyer’s Comeback: A New Era for Indian T20 Cricket

On December 3, 2023, Shreyas Iyer played his last T20I match for India against Australia in Bengaluru, where he scored 53 runs off 37 balls. At that time, things didn’t look promising for the 31-year-old as he was left out of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, despite being part of the team ahead of a series against New Zealand.

However, the situation has turned around dramatically. Iyer is now set to make a strong comeback, not just as a player, but as the captain of the Indian T20 team. Sources have confirmed that he will take over from his Mumbai teammate Suryakumar Yadav, marking a fresh chapter for Indian cricket in the wake of their recent T20 World Cup success.

Agarkar, a former cricketer, expressed strong support for Iyer’s new role. “Shreyas truly deserves this opportunity. His batting speaks for itself, and he has proven his skills as a leader, especially during his successful stint with KKR,” he said.

Ricky Ponting, the legendary Australian cricketer, also praised Iyer’s growth. He noted that Iyer has matured both as a player and a leader, saying, “He commands respect from his teammates, and when he speaks, everyone listens.” Ponting believes this marks a promising future for Iyer in T20 cricket.

Iyer’s improvement on the field has been impressive. In the 2025 IPL season, he scored a remarkable 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, helping Punjab Kings reach the final. The following year, he continued to shine, scoring 498 runs with an impressive strike rate of 168.81. His ability to adapt his game has made him an essential candidate for the Indian team, especially at the No. 4 batting position.

His captaincy skills also stand out. Shreyas has shown that he can handle pressure with confidence, making crucial decisions that benefit his team. His proactive approach was evident when he entrusted Harshit Rana with a critical bowling assignment in a tight match.

As Iyer steps into the captaincy role, he will have access to world-class bowlers, an opportunity he is expected to handle well. With his knack for leading and adapting, Shreyas Iyer is poised to take Indian T20 cricket into a new, exciting era.

All eyes will be on him as he moves forward in this leadership role.
