London has once again taken the lead over Paris to become Europe’s top tech hub, as highlighted in the latest Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index for 2026. Ranked fourth globally, London remains a key player in the competition for advancements in AI and deep tech.

This resurgence can be attributed to increased investment from venture capital, a thriving community of unicorns, and a strong presence across various sectors. Last year alone, tech firms in London raised a whopping $17.7 billion (£13.2 billion) and the city is now home to 138 unicorns, including notable companies like Wayve, Granola, OLIX, and ElevenLabs.

The UK’s tech scene excels particularly in areas like AI, fintech, and life sciences, with London leading in investment and the scale of its businesses. Meanwhile, cities like Cambridge and Oxford continue to earn global recognition for their research-driven innovations and university spin-offs.

Alongside AI pioneers such as Wayve and ElevenLabs, the UK is also home to famous fintech companies including Monzo, Revolut, and Wise.

Beyond London and Paris, Europe’s tech landscape is becoming increasingly competitive. Munich is rising as a strong player for deep tech and industrial innovation, reflecting Germany’s growing footprint in the sector.

Europe boasts impressive representation in global rankings, with 45 cities in the top 100 for innovation, surpassing North America’s 40. These rankings assess metrics like startup activity, unicorn creation, and connections with universities.

Cambridge ranks as the third-highest density leader in the world, right behind the Bay Area and Boston, and is the top in Europe. This success is due to its vibrant startup scene, research focus, and excellent university collaborations. Oxford also stands out as a prominent center for deep tech and life sciences.

“London regaining its top position in Europe demonstrates the strength and flexibility of the UK’s tech ecosystem,” says Yoram Wijngaarde, founder and CEO at Dealroom.co. “The city continues to attract global investments while fostering significant companies in AI, fintech, and life sciences.”

He adds, “At the same time, cities like Cambridge and Oxford shine in research and innovation, showcasing the emergence of smaller ecosystems that are vital for future technological advancements.”
