Apple has announced a new partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its AI capabilities. During the AWS Reinvent conference held in Las Vegas, Apple shared that it will utilize AWS’s custom artificial intelligence chips to pre-train its Apple Intelligence models.
Benoit Dupin, Apple’s senior director of machine learning and AI, spoke about the long-standing relationship between the two companies. He noted that the use of Amazon’s Inferentia and Graviton chips has already led to a 40% increase in the efficiency of Apple’s search services. The tech giant is now exploring Amazon’s latest chip, Trainium2, which could offer even greater improvements—up to 50% better efficiency in pre-training their models.
This collaboration is significant as it represents one of the few times Apple has publicly acknowledged working closely with a technology supplier like Amazon. AWS CEO Matt Garman revealed that Apple reached out to Amazon for help in building its generative AI capabilities.
Despite concerns about user privacy, Apple reassured its customers that the chips will only be used for model training tasks, which do not involve handling user data directly. The company will maintain its own Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, powered by its own silicon, for processing actual AI features.
This new development follows Apple’s earlier initiative in July when it was revealed that the company used hardware designed by Google to develop its foundational AI model.
