Pakistani Workers in UAE: ‘Our Only Offense is Being Shia’ Amid Deportation Crisis

Title: UAE’s Deportation of Pakistani Shia Community Sparks Concerns

In a poignant African proverb, it is said, “When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.” Today, the Pakistani Shia community in the UAE finds itself in a harrowing situation amid rising regional tensions. With the backdrop of the US-Iran conflict and worsening ties between Abu Dhabi and Islamabad, Shia Pakistanis are experiencing severe repercussions, including reported deportations in the thousands.

The UAE is home to over 1.8 million Pakistani expatriates, making them the second-largest foreign community in the country. This workforce plays a crucial role in Pakistan’s economy, sending back billions in remittances each year. However, recent reports indicate that the Shia community within this group has come under increased scrutiny and persecution.

While the Pakistani Foreign Ministry claims there are no mass deportations, community leaders argue otherwise. Mohammad Amin Shaheedi, a cleric leading a Shia political organization, mentions that around 5,000 families have been registered as deported, and other estimates suggest that the number could be as high as 15,000.

Deportations appear to stem from long-standing prejudice against Shia populations in the Gulf region, exacerbated by recent geopolitical tensions. Since Iran’s military actions have directly affected the UAE, Abu Dhabi’s frustration with Islamabad has grown. Instead of taking a firm stance against Iran, Pakistan has chosen to act as a mediator, a position that has not sat well with the UAE.

Tensions escalated significantly after the killing of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, leading to violent protests in Pakistan and heightened awareness of Shia communities’ activities in the Gulf. Historically, Gulf states have viewed Shia populations through the lens of Iranian influence, particularly following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The environment has become further troubling since the 2020 Abraham Accords, shifting the security dynamics for Shia expatriates. Community members report heightened surveillance during public rituals and claims of arbitrary detention without legal justifications.

Reports suggest that the deportation process is both swift and opaque. Those affected recount sudden detentions and removals, with individuals often receiving no official reason for their expulsion. Many have lost their jobs and savings unexpectedly, being forced to leave behind years of hard work.

The situation for the Shia community remains precarious. Despite the frustrations voiced by community leaders, some feel it’s futile to seek help from the Pakistani government, given the strained diplomatic relations. “Our only crime is being Shia,” one deportee lamented, highlighting the deep sadness and uncertainty now looming over those caught in these political crossfires.

As families struggle to understand their fate, the larger issue of security and stability in the Gulf continues to take precedence. While the UAE has the right to safeguard its interests, the humanitarian impact on those involved cannot be overlooked.
