RCB’s Approach Raises Eyebrows After SRH Match

On Friday night, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a high-stakes match, but their approach to chasing 256 runs has sparked a lively debate among fans.

Despite losing by 55 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, RCB secured a top-two finish in IPL 2026 thanks to their net run rate. This is a significant achievement since a top-two finish provides teams with two chances to reach the IPL final.

However, many fans were left frustrated as they watched RCB seemingly shift focus during the chase. Social media quickly divided into two camps. Some questioned why RCB slowed down after a great start, especially on a pitch where SRH scored over 250 runs effortlessly. Others argued that after the dismissal of star player Virat Kohli, it was smarter for RCB to protect their qualification spot rather than take unnecessary risks.

How RCB Handled Their Chase

Venkatesh Iyer kicked off strongly, scoring 44 runs off just 19 balls, while Kohli seemed in good form early on. RCB raced to 75 runs in the powerplay, albeit losing two wickets. For a moment, SRH looked on the back foot.

However, the momentum changed dramatically after the powerplay. Kohli was out for just 15 runs, which led to a significant slowdown for RCB. Surprising many, it took until the 13th over for RCB to reach the 120-run mark, and from then on, it felt like they were more focused on securing their playoff spot rather than threatening SRH’s total.

While Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya managed to put together a partnership of 84 runs off 57 balls, this did not create enough pressure on SRH in such a massive chase. Patidar finished with 53 runs off 37 balls, but his strike rate of 143.24 felt unusually restrained, especially given RCB’s usual aggressive style.

The late arrival of big hitters like Tim David and Jitesh Sharma also added fuel to the ongoing debate. Some RCB fans defended the cautious approach, arguing that once Kohli was out, the risk of a batting collapse was high. With so much at stake, they contended, it was wiser to play it safe rather than risk everything on an aggressive chase.

Fans Express Their Concerns

Criticism also came from former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who questioned the team’s tactics, particularly the batting order decisions. Many fans echoed his sentiments, suggesting that RCB should have fully committed to an all-out attack, given the monumental target they were pursuing.

In the aftermath, RCB captain Rajat Patidar made it clear what the team was thinking. He acknowledged that while their primary aim was to finish at the top, chasing such a high total was challenging. “255 is a good score on this wicket,” he reflected, attributing SRH’s performance to their effective bowling strategies.

Interestingly, SRH themselves are well aware of the significance of finishing in the top two. Ishan Kishan, who led his team with a stellar 79 runs off 44 balls, emphasized the importance of securing a top-two finish from the start of the season.

What RCB may have lost in the match, they seem to believe they gained something just as crucial: a place in the playoffs.
