Google Revamps Gemini Usage Limits: What Users Need to Know

Google Adjusts Gemini Usage Limits for Users

During the Google I/O 2026 conference, Google announced a significant change to how users interact with its AI, Gemini. Instead of just counting the number of prompts users can make each day, the platform will now monitor the amount of computing power consumed. This change means that more complex tasks will use up a user’s quota more quickly.

Previously, users faced a fixed daily limit on prompts. Now, Google has introduced a system where limits refresh every five hours, depending on how demanding the tasks are. For example, simple text questions will require less computing power, while more complex actions, such as video creation or thorough research, will use more resources.

Google explained that the new system offers compute-based limits that refresh regularly. Users will need to keep an eye on how they use the service, as things like prompt complexity and chat length will affect their usage. Those who pay for a Google AI subscription enjoy higher limits compared to free users.

Certain features, especially the premium ones, will consume more computing resources, which means users could reach their limits faster. These premium features include:

  • Media generation
  • In-depth research
  • Advanced model usage
  • Extended thinking tasks

Usage Limits Overview

Here’s a quick look at the different plans and their limits:

Plan Limit
Without a plan Standard limits
AI Plus 2x higher than standard limits
AI Pro 4x higher than standard limits
AI Ultra 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro, depending on your subscription

How the Changes Affect Users

Casual users who rely on Gemini for everyday questions likely won’t notice any major changes. However, those using Gemini for professional tasks like coding or media creation will need to be more mindful of their computing power usage.

Google has confirmed that the usage limits for users under 18 will stay the same. The company believes these new limits will help manage resource-heavy features like image and video generation more effectively, while encouraging users to consider upgrading to higher-tier plans for heavier tasks.
