DR Congo’s Ebola Fatalities Surge to 131

DR Congo Faces Rising Ebola Death Toll

Kinshasa: The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to a tragic rise in the number of deaths, now estimated at 131, with 513 suspected cases reported, according to Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba.

Previously, officials noted 91 deaths linked to about 350 suspected cases. The World Health Organization has labeled this outbreak as an international health emergency, due to the severity of the situation.

Sadly, there is currently no vaccine or treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola responsible for this recent outbreak. Over the past 50 years, Ebola has tragically taken more than 15,000 lives across Africa.

During a late-night broadcast on Congolese national television, Kamba informed that the current figures are still estimates. He emphasized the need for more research to confirm if all suspected deaths are indeed caused by Ebola.

The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the northeastern Ituri province, which borders Uganda and South Sudan. This region’s status as a gold-mining area results in frequent movement of people, raising concerns over the virus spreading.

Reports indicate that suspected cases have reached the commercial center of Butembo, approximately 200 kilometers from where the outbreak began. Additionally, a case has been identified in Goma, a major provincial capital currently under the control of the Rwanda-backed M23 militia.

Kamba explained that the response to the outbreak has been hampered by misconceptions within the community. Many believed it was a mystical illness, leading to delays in seeking hospital treatment for the sick. Currently, only a limited number of samples have been tested in laboratories, so findings are largely based on symptoms presented in suspected cases.
