India Reviews Commonwealth Games Preparations and Olympic Bid

In a recent online meeting, India’s plans for the Commonwealth Games were discussed alongside the country’s bid for the 2036 Olympics. The session was led by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and included Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, who joined from afar.

Held on Thursday, the meeting welcomed key officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Sanghavi, who also oversees sports, youth affairs, and cultural activities in Gujarat, was supported by other representatives from the state.

The main focus of the discussion was the upcoming closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. During this event, responsibility will be transferred to Ahmedabad, designated as the host for the 2030 edition. However, the topic of India’s Olympic bid also emerged in conversation, as stakeholders assessed the next steps once the selection process resumes.

While no significant decisions were made, participants shared insights on the future trajectory of the bidding process. Last year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) paused host selections to reassess its criteria; however, progress is expected to restart by the end of this year or early next year.

India is currently in the “Continuous Dialogue” phase regarding its Olympic bid after expressing interest in hosting the Games in Ahmedabad by October 2024.

Additionally, Minister Mandaviya took the opportunity to evaluate preparations for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Glasgow in July and August. A statement from the Sports Ministry highlighted the need for coordination among all parties involved, with a focus on ensuring robust support for Indian athletes training for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

An “India House” is anticipated to be established during the Games to provide additional support for athletes. The meeting also reviewed inter-ministerial coordination, with efforts aimed at operational and logistical preparations for Glasgow 2026. This includes collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, along with departments related to culture and tourism, to facilitate smooth operations for the athletes.

In summary, the meeting served as a crucial step in setting the stage for future athletic events in India, ensuring that preparations continue seamlessly.
