Deadly Storm Hits Uttar Pradesh, Over 100 Lives Lost
A powerful storm struck Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populated state, on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of more than 100 individuals. Rescue officials reported that the chief minister has ordered relief funds to be distributed within 24 hours to help those affected.
Storms are a regular occurrence in this northern state during the warm months from March to June, preceding the arrival of monsoon rains. However, this particular storm resulted in 59 injuries, damaged 87 homes, and sadly claimed 114 livestock, according to authorities.
About 104 fatalities were confirmed across nearly a dozen districts, with the hardest-hit area being around Prayagraj, a well-known Hindu pilgrimage site, as indicated by Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, the state’s relief commissioner.
Residents shared their experiences of the chaos. Ashok Rai, from Obra, a coal-rich city in Sonbhadra district, described how the sky turned dark for about half an hour. He explained that strong winds lifted hoardings and signboards, scattering them along with thick coal dust in the air.
Images broadcast on television showed uprooted trees and billboards landing on cars, while wooden furniture from roadside stalls was smashed by the storm’s force. A video captured a man being lifted from a tin structure he was holding onto, though he was injured, he managed to survive the incident in Bareilly district.
Sadly, some deaths were attributed to falling trees and collapsing walls, a state relief official noted.
In response to this disaster, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, has directed officials to provide immediate assistance to survivors and ensure financial aid reaches them swiftly.
