Mel Gibson’s Joe Rogan Appearance Sparks Surge in Ivermectin Cancer Prescriptions

Rise in Ivermectin Prescriptions Linked to Celebrity Endorsement

Following a recent podcast episode, there has been a notable surge in prescriptions for ivermectin among cancer patients. This increase coincided with actor Mel Gibson’s comments endorsing the medication during his appearance on Joe Rogan’s show in January 2025.

Gibson shared a personal story about three friends battling stage 4 cancer, remarking that all three are now cancer-free. When asked about their treatment, he mentioned using ivermectin and another drug called fenbendazole.

Ivermectin is primarily an antiparasitic medication used to treat infections caused by certain worms and parasites in both humans and animals. Fenbendazole, on the other hand, is often used in veterinary medicine for the same purpose.

During the podcast, Gibson expressed his belief that “there is nothing that can afflict mankind that hasn’t got a natural cure for it.” This statement has sparked discussions and raised interest in these medications as potential cancer treatments.

A study from Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, UCLA, and the University of Michigan looked at health records from over 68 million patients to assess any increase in prescriptions following Gibson’s remarks. Researchers found that overall prescribing rates nearly doubled, with a 2½ times increase among cancer patients specifically. The most significant rises were noted among younger men, White patients, and those residing in southern states.

Although the study published in JAMA Network Open did not look at the safety of the drug combination, experts warned that no clinical trials have supported the effectiveness of ivermectin and fenbendazole for treating cancer. Many health professionals, like Dr. Skyler B. Johnson from the University of Utah, noted that while some animal studies suggest these drugs can have anti-cancer effects, the doses required could be harmful to humans.

Michelle Rockwell, the lead author of the study, highlighted the challenges clinicians face when patients strongly believe in the benefits of certain medications, especially those endorsed by celebrities.

While there are ongoing conversations about the potential of these drugs, doctors emphasize that patients should always consult healthcare professionals before making treatment decisions. It’s essential to prioritize safe and evidence-based practices in cancer care.
