Delhi Capitals Captain Fined Following Slow Over-Rate During IPL Match

Delhi Capitals’ captain Axar Patel has received a fine of ₹12 lakh after his team was found to have a slow over-rate in their IPL 2026 match against the Punjab Kings in Dharamshala on May 11. This penalty was announced even as Delhi celebrated a thrilling three-wicket victory that kept their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) confirmed the fine in an official statement following Match No. 55 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. According to the announcement, this was the first slow over-rate offence for Delhi Capitals this season, which falls under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

While the fine is a minor setback for Axar, he will undoubtedly take pride in his team’s dramatic win during a critical match.

Axar’s Leadership Shines in Challenging Chase

Chasing a tough target of 211 runs, Delhi Capitals found themselves in a tight spot at 74 for 4. However, Axar played a key role, scoring a composed 56 runs to steady the innings just when his team needed it the most.

David Miller then added momentum with a quickfire 51 runs, helping Delhi turn the game around. Contributions from Ashutosh Sharma and Madhav Tiwari ensured that the team successfully reached a total of 216 for 7 in just 19 overs.

Earlier in the match, Punjab Kings had set a solid score of 210 for 5. Priyansh Arya got them off to a great start with a rapid 56 runs off 33 balls, while Prabhsimran Singh also contributed with 18 runs in a strong opening partnership worth 78 runs.

After the openers were dismissed, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer guided the innings masterfully, finishing with 59 runs from 36 balls. Cooper Connolly added 38 runs to the total, but overall, the Delhi bowlers struggled to contain the scoring in this high-octane match.

The victory has lifted the spirits of the Delhi Capitals, keeping their playoff aspirations alive, although the road ahead remains challenging. Currently sitting in seventh place on the points table, they will face the Rajasthan Royals at home in another crucial match on Sunday.

This victory not only boosts Delhi’s morale but also intensifies the competition as teams push for playoff positions in IPL 2026.
