PM Modi Calls for Austerity in Response to Global Energy Crisis

In a recent address in Hyderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to embrace austerity as India contends with rising fuel prices and an ongoing global energy crisis. He recommended several measures, including reduced fuel consumption, postponing foreign travel, and lowering edible oil use.

Modi stressed that with the nation importing over 88% of its crude oil, every Indian should contribute to conserving resources. “In this time of global crisis, we have a duty to resolve to use petrol and diesel wisely,” he stated. The Prime Minister encouraged those living in cities with Metro services to rely on public transport, and suggested carpooling whenever possible.

He also highlighted the importance of electric vehicles, promoting a shift in freight transport to railways, and reviving work-from-home practices that became common during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We became accustomed to online meetings and remote work during the pandemic; restarting these systems now is essential for our national interest,” he said.

As crude oil prices have soared since the outbreak of the conflict in West Asia, the government faces increasing pressure on its foreign exchange reserves. Modi urged citizens to be vigilant about conserving foreign currency, especially given the significant rise in petrol and diesel costs globally.

“Every household can play a role in this effort by curbing non-essential spending—whether that’s cutting back on foreign travel or delaying gold purchases,” he explained. He encouraged citizens to reconsider their travel plans and avoid international trips for at least a year to help stabilize foreign reserves.

The Prime Minister also requested a reduction in edible oil consumption and suggested a shift toward natural farming to decrease reliance on imported fertilizers, which further strain foreign reserves. “Reducing edible oil use is a patriotic contribution,” he emphasized.

In a briefing, government officials noted that the rising cost of oil is affecting the economy significantly. With crude prices climbing from around $70 to nearly $120 per barrel since February, the domestic currency has also weakened, creating economic challenges.

Modi’s appeals for restraint come amid expectations of potential hikes in fuel prices, with some experts suggesting these discussions prepare the public for upcoming adjustments. Union Home Minister Amit Shah supported the PM’s call, describing it as a vision for making India self-reliant in energy.

Meanwhile, the Opposition has criticized the government for not being adequately prepared for the ongoing crisis, questioning the effectiveness of its plans to ensure energy security amidst rising global tensions.

As the nation navigates these challenges, Modi’s push for collective responsibility and resource conservation resonates as a timely appeal for unity during uncertain times.
