Explosion at Fireworks Factory in China Claims Lives
An explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has resulted in at least 21 deaths and left 61 individuals injured, according to reports from state media. The incident took place on Monday afternoon at a plant in Liuyang, a city under the jurisdiction of Changsha in Hunan province.
The facility, owned by Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co., is part of a well-known area for fireworks production, as noted by the China Daily.
Aerial footage from state broadcaster CCTV shows smoke continuing to rise from the site, with significant destruction evident in the surrounding area. Nearly 500 firefighters and emergency responders were deployed to the scene. Authorities evacuated people from nearby zones due to potential dangers from black powder storage at the site.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged for “all-out efforts” to rescue injured victims and locate those unaccounted for. He has also called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion and emphasized the need for stricter safety measures in key industries.
After serious accidents, it is common for President Xi to issue instructions to local officials regarding safety improvements and accountability.
In response to the explosion, investigators are examining the incident, and safety measures are being applied to prevent further accidents.
