Nandni Sharma’s Cricket Journey Takes Flight with National Call-Up

Nandni Sharma, who once dreamt of being a lawyer or an astronaut, has taken a different path and is now thriving in the world of cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squads for the Women’s T20 World Cup and the upcoming tour of England, and Nandni is set to make her mark in both the T20 matches and the Test at Lord’s this July.

The year 2026 has been a pivotal one for Nandni. She made a great impression in her first Women’s Premier League (WPL) season with the Delhi Capitals, where she achieved a remarkable hat-trick and took five wickets in a match against the Gujarat Giants. Overall, she ended the season with 17 wickets in 10 games, maintaining an economy rate of 8.31. Nandni shared that while her childhood dreams were challenging to achieve, cricket felt more attainable.

“I chose cricket fairly early in life. As a kid, I dreamed of being a lawyer or an astronaut, but those dreams seemed tough to chase, so I focused on cricket instead,” Nandni explained at a recent award ceremony in Chandigarh.

An Emotional Moment

Nandni recalled the moment she received her first call-up to the national team, describing it as emotional for both her and her family. She was driving when a friend broke the exciting news.

“The reaction was overwhelming; my family and I were so emotional. When I heard about it, I had to pull over to process the news. At first, I couldn’t believe it, but after verifying it myself, it sunk in. It was such an overwhelming feeling,” she added.

Jemimah Rodrigues, who captained Nandni in the WPL, praised her for her consistent performance and impact during the league. She noted that the team didn’t expect such immediate results and expressed confidence that the seasoned squad would help Nandni grow and unleash her full potential.

India is set to play a three-match T20 series in England before they kick off their T20 World Cup journey against Pakistan on June 14 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
