New Chairman for Prasar Bharati: Prasoon Joshi Steps In

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has appointed renowned lyricist and communications expert Prasoon Joshi as the new chairman of Prasar Bharati. This move fills an important leadership gap at the public broadcaster, which has been without a permanent head since December.

Joshi, who currently chairs the Central Board of Film Certification, brings a wealth of experience in advertising, cinema, literature, and public communication. His leadership comes at a crucial time as Prasar Bharati adapts to the fast-changing digital landscape and the shifting preferences of its audience.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Joshi as a “rare creative spirit.” He expressed confidence that Joshi’s leadership would bring “renewed energy, deeper purpose, and a fresh creative voice” to the organization.

The chairman position was previously held by former IAS officer Navneet Kumar Sehgal, who stepped down last December.

As an award-winning lyricist and a seasoned advertising professional, Joshi has led significant global campaigns and has served as CEO of McCann World Group India, as well as chairman for the Asia Pacific region. Since taking on his role at the film certification board in 2017, he has maintained a balanced approach between promoting creative expression and upholding regulatory standards.

Prasar Bharati, established under the Prasar Bharati Act of 1990, supervises All India Radio and Doordarshan. Together, these two entities create one of the largest media networks in India, reaching a wide audience across television, radio, and digital platforms.

Officials believe that Joshi’s expertise in storytelling and mass communication will play a vital role in revitalizing public broadcasting, helping it stand out in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven media environment, with an emphasis on content innovation and audience engagement.
