KL Rahul’s Game-Changing Performance in IPL 2026
For a long time, KL Rahul faced criticism not because of his runs, but due to his strike rate. Since 2018, he has consistently scored over 500 runs each season, with the exception of IPL 2023. Yet, experts felt he wasn’t adapting to the fast-paced T20 style of play.
In 2026, however, things seem to have taken a positive turn for the star player. Rahul has amassed 433 runs in just nine matches, featuring a century and three half-centuries. His impressive 75 runs off 40 balls against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur recently helped Delhi Capitals break their losing streak and regain momentum in the tournament. Notably, his strike rate has jumped to 185.84, marking the best of his IPL career and indicating his willingness to embrace the modern T20 approach.
KL Rahul’s Performance Over the Years
- 2018: 659 runs | Strike Rate: 158.41
- 2019: 593 runs | Strike Rate: 135.38
- 2020: 670 runs | Strike Rate: 129.34
- 2021: 626 runs | Strike Rate: 138.80
- 2022: 616 runs | Strike Rate: 135.38
- 2023: 274 runs | Strike Rate: 113.22
- 2024: 520 runs | Strike Rate: 136.13
- 2025: 539 runs | Strike Rate: 149.72
- 2026: 433 runs | Strike Rate: 185.84
Not too long ago, Rahul mentioned that he believed strike rate was overrated in T20 cricket. Now, he fully embraces the explosive style that defines the format. After the recent victory, he expressed satisfaction in putting his team first and adapting to what’s required in today’s game.
“I’m glad to be doing what’s needed for the team and for modern T20 cricket. It’s satisfying,” said Rahul.
Teamwork in the Chase
In the match against Rajasthan, Rahul and Pathum Nissanka formed a formidable partnership, scoring 110 runs off just 57 balls. While Nissanka took on most of the responsibility during the initial overs, Rahul admitted that he would have liked to face more balls during the powerplay.
“I wanted to be more involved in the powerplay,” Rahul said. “But the way Pathum was batting, I did not have much to do except watch him play brilliantly. His performance really set us up for a strong chase. We expect aggressive play during the powerplay, especially against a strong team like them.”
Looking ahead, Delhi Capitals will take on Chennai Super Kings next in New Delhi on May 5.
