New Energy Hub Opens in Newport News to Boost Innovation
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A new facility aimed at improving energy technologies has officially opened its doors in Newport News. This hub, named the “Secure Energy Future Center,” is designed to help new technologies make their way from research labs into practical applications.
Located in the Tech Center Research Park, the center is run by the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. It brings together universities, industry experts, and government partners to work on cutting-edge energy solutions.
Officials behind the project believe the center will help meet rising energy demands and tackle existing infrastructure challenges. It will focus on building resilience, developing the workforce, and promoting new technologies. Notably, it will also collaborate with major federal research centers, such as NASA Langley and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.
Virginia Tech highlights that this initiative takes advantage of Hampton Roads’ unique strengths, including its strong maritime and defense industries, port facilities, and close ties to federal laboratories. The aim is to create a team effort that hastens the delivery of energy innovations into everyday use.
On April 22, over 100 leaders from government, education, and industry came together to check out the new center. The facility includes interactive technology aimed at supporting training and demonstrations as well as fostering collaboration.
Virginia Tech President Tim Sands expressed pride in being part of this innovative community, which is close to notable institutions like Jefferson Lab and NASA Langley, alongside advanced defense and maritime facilities.
State leaders see this center as part of a larger shift in how economic development priorities are set. Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Carrie Chenery noted, “The focus has shifted from just finding suitable buildings to tackling energy supply and future needs.”
The Secure Energy Future Center will host a variety of programs focused on energy education, workforce training, and collaboration with businesses and entrepreneurs. Organizers aim to streamline the journey of new energy technologies from concept to market.
Moreover, officials are optimistic about the economic benefits. They believe the center will create jobs and enhance regional resilience by aligning research from universities with the needs of the industry.
