Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal: A Unique Role in Rajya Sabha
In Jalandhar, Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, the only Rajya Sabha member representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), joined the Upper House after significant criticism regarding the party’s choice of nominees back in March 2022. He accepted the position in July of the same year, but only after much persuasion from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and with a promise to refrain from active political involvement.
In an interview, Seechewal shared that he was approached by Mann multiple times about taking the Rajya Sabha seat. “I declined three times, suggesting that someone else should take it. But he was really persuasive, and I finally accepted on the condition that I would not engage in political activities or rallies,” Seechewal said.
Since taking the seat, Seechewal has remained distant from AAP’s typical political functions, concentrating instead on environmental issues. Recently, he participated in a meeting led by the chief minister to discuss efforts related to the cleaning of Buddha Darya and Chitti Bein.
Commenting on the recent resignation of seven AAP MPs from the Rajya Sabha, Seechewal expressed concern that the original purpose of their appointments has been compromised.
