AI Expert Warns of Job Changes Ahead: 3 Key Skills to Stay Relevant

Ben Goertzel, a leading figure in the field of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), has a serious message for today’s workers: prepare for a potential “job apocalypse.” He believes that advanced AI will mimic human intelligence within the next two to three years, and many current jobs may soon become obsolete.

Goertzel, often referred to as the “Father of AGI,” highlights that this AI revolution is particularly impacting office professionals, including lawyers and graphic designers. However, he points out that jobs that require a physical touch or complex manual skills—like plumbers, electricians, and teachers—are likely to remain safe for a longer time.

Three Essential Skills to Stay “AI-Proof”

To help navigate this changing landscape, Goertzel suggests focusing on three key human skills:

  1. Emotional Intelligence: As computers take over analytical roles, human connection will become more valuable. Being able to build relationships, actively listen, and empathize will set individuals apart in a world flooded with automated applications and digital hiring processes. Real human connections could be the best way to stand out.

  2. Adaptability: Goertzel emphasizes the need for workers to be flexible. The days of having one steady job for life are gone. To thrive, individuals must be willing to change career paths swiftly and learn new skills regularly. If your job tasks can easily be handled by AI, it’s crucial to transition into fields that require human insight and creativity.

  3. Decoupling Identity from Work: Many people tie their sense of self-worth to their jobs. Goertzel urges individuals to find comfort in who they are beyond what they do for a living. As AGI reshapes the work landscape, the focus should be on personal growth rather than just job survival.

Overall, the future of work is evolving quickly, and embracing these skills could help ensure relevance in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
