IRGC Captures Two Vessels in Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions, Experts Suggest

Tensions Rise in the Strait of Hormuz After Iran Seizes Ships

On April 22, tensions intensified in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) captured two vessels, seen by experts as a retaliatory move against the United States. One of the seized ships, the MSC Francesca, is associated with a wealthy shipping family linked to former Presidents Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron.

Iranian state television broadcasted footage that appears to show IRGC personnel taking control of the ships. The MSC Francesca is owned by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, founded by Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte and currently managed by his children. A family member of one of the ship’s crew revealed that around 20 armed Iranians boarded the vessel but noted that the crew members are being treated well.

Montenegro’s Minister of Maritime Affairs, Filip Radulovic, confirmed that the ship is anchored nine nautical miles from Iran’s coast and that discussions between MSC and Iranian officials are ongoing, assuring that the sailors are safe.

Analysts believe the IRGC’s actions are part of a “tit-for-tat” strategy following a U.S. naval blockade enacted on April 13, which included the seizure of an Iranian ship. Windward AI, a maritime intelligence firm, indicated that the IRGC targeted three vessels during the operation, managing to capture the MSC Francesca and another ship, while one escaped.

This situation has raised alarms, especially since the IRGC has a history of alleging connections between MSC and Israel. Gianluigi Aponte’s family ties to prominent figures and his company’s activities in Israel have fueled these claims.

Additionally, various reports highlight Aponte’s close relationships with U.S. and global leaders, including his interactions with the Trump administration and French President Emmanuel Macron. His influence in international shipping matters has grown, particularly pertaining to key deals involving ports.

The IRGC stated that both vessels were operating without the required permits, which could complicate ongoing negotiations. The MSC Francesca, built in 2008, typically operates routes between the U.S. West Coast, Asia, and the Gulf region.

As this situation develops, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution.
