Gautam Gambhir Backs Sanju Samson After T20I Loss to England
India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has emphasized that Sanju Samson remains a strong contender for future matches, despite his unexpected omission from the playing XI during the recent third T20I against England. In this match, India faced a significant defeat, losing by 125 runs and falling into a 2-0 series hole in the five-match series.
This defeat marks India’s largest loss in T20I history, raising questions about the team’s selection decisions. Chasing 202 runs, India was bowled out for a mere 76 runs in just 11.4 overs, with Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue playing pivotal roles in dismantling the batting lineup. This loss extended Shreyas Iyer’s winless streak as T20I captain to five matches, leaving the team searching for answers amid a series of disappointing performances.
One major point of discussion has been Sanju Samson’s absence from the lineup. The wicketkeeper-batter was a key player for India during their recent T20 World Cup victory, but he has found himself watching from the sidelines during this challenging phase for the team.
Gambhir Addresses Samson’s Role
In the aftermath of the defeat, Gambhir clarified that Samson is still very much in the team’s plans. He mentioned that he had a conversation with Samson about his role, emphasizing that such talks are private.
“I’ve given Sanju the clarity he needed about his place in the team. That’s a conversation between the player and me,” Gambhir stated.
He acknowledged Samson’s impactful performances in the past while stressing that current form will continue to guide selection decisions. “What Sanju has achieved for India has been remarkable. However, at times, we need to consider a player’s current performance. There’s no strict rule against his return to the team in this series,” he explained.
Gambhir also defended the selection process, indicating that all players must continually prove themselves worthy of a spot on the team. “International cricket is results-driven. We pick the combination we think will yield the best results,” he remarked.
Need for Adaptability
With India struggling so far in the tour, Gambhir noted the team’s lack of adaptability to different conditions, which has impacted their performance against both Ireland and England. “We simply haven’t adapted well. If we had, we might not have lost four games in a row,” he admitted.
The significant defeat in Bristol has intensified discussions around India’s team setup. While Gambhir has confirmed that Samson’s international career is not over, the team’s ongoing challenges mean that every selection decision will be scrutinized until performances improve.
