Pope Leo XIV Calls on African Youth to Champion Their Nations Over Migration

Pope Leo XIV Encourages African Youth to Build Their Future at Home

Pope Leo XIV recently addressed university students in Cameroon, urging them to focus on improving their own countries instead of seeking better opportunities abroad. Speaking at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé, the Pope emphasized the importance of serving their nation during his ongoing 11-day visit to Africa.

He acknowledged the common desire to migrate, highlighting the need to use the knowledge gained in their studies to benefit fellow citizens. “I invite you to respond with a strong desire to serve your country,” he said.

In his speech, Leo noted that while many young people face challenges like corruption and economic hardships leading to migration, it’s vital for the youth to commit to addressing these issues at home. “Africa must be freed from the scourge of corruption,” he added, stressing that young people should become the “witnesses of wisdom and justice” that the continent needs.

The Pope highlighted that through education and moral development, students can become builders of a more just and humane society.

According to the World Migration Report, many Africans face internal displacement, with millions living in other countries on the continent. Additionally, overseas migration is on the rise, with around 11 million Africans moving to Europe and 8 million to other regions.

The underlying causes of this displacement include political conflict, corruption, and economic struggles that create widespread poverty, particularly in nations like Somalia, Nigeria, and parts of Sudan.

Recent criticisms from former President Donald Trump added to the context of the Pope’s visit, as he had previously called Leo’s approach “weak” on foreign policy. In response, the Pope has expressed his goal of fostering peace and understanding among nations instead of engaging in direct conflicts.

Pope Leo XIV’s message resonates with hope and encouragement for the youth to envision a brighter future while creating positive change within their own communities.
