Indian Stocks Lag Behind Tech-Focused Asian Rivals: A Trend Set to Continue

Good Morning!

I’m Rajesh Mascarenhas reporting from Mumbai, summarizing a week full of ups and downs in the markets.

On Friday, Asian stocks opened lower, showing that investors are cautious and not ready to take major risks as the weekend approaches. This comes even after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope for a lasting ceasefire with Iran. However, it’s important to note that regional markets had a strong rebound in April, with South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan seeing significant gains.

Many investors are leaning towards tech-focused markets, especially with renewed interest in artificial intelligence. In contrast, countries like India, which don’t have strong AI companies and are more sensitive to oil price fluctuations due to the Iran situation, may continue to lag behind. This week, analysts from Goldman Sachs started a new strategy by investing in South Korea and Taiwan while betting against India, the Philippines, and Thailand.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll explore the reasons behind these trends.
