Trump Intensifies Critique of Pope Leo Amid Iran Tensions

Trump Criticizes Pope Over Iran Comments

WASHINGTON: Former US President Donald Trump has once again voiced his disagreement with Pope Leo regarding policies on war and immigration. In a post on Truth Social on Tuesday night, Trump stated that someone should inform the Pope about the violent actions taken against protesters in Iran and expressed that Iran possessing a nuclear weapon would be “absolutely unacceptable.”

In a separate discussion, Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open during a recent phone call. This reflects ongoing tensions in the region, especially following US and Israeli military actions against Iran on February 28. In retaliation, Iran conducted strikes against Israel and US bases in Gulf nations, resulting in significant casualties and displacement.

While Iran does not currently possess nuclear weapons, suspicions persist in the West about its intentions. Tehran, a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has consistently denied any plans to develop nuclear arms.

These comments come after Pope Leo raised concerns about the potential dangers of democracies failing to uphold moral values, suggesting that such failures could lead to “majoritarian tyranny.” The Pope, who is the first American pontiff, criticized Trump’s military actions, explaining that God does not support those who engage in warfare fueled by violence.

Notably, Pope Leo labeled Trump’s recent threats against Iran as unacceptable and had previously opted out of Trump’s “Board of Peace” initiative for Gaza. The Pope has also called for a thoughtful approach to how migrants are treated in the US, a point that contrasts sharply with Trump’s strict immigration policies.

On Sunday, Trump didn’t hold back in expressing his views, labeling the Pope as “weak” and “terrible” on issues related to crime and foreign policy.
